Below is a list of commonly used terms that will help you become proficient at communicating in the esthetics industry.
Esthetician
An individual who is trained and licensed in the anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and pathology of the skin. Estheticians provide preventative care to help keep the skin healthy, as well as therapeutic care to alleviate specific skin conditions.

Cosmetician
Another word commonly used in place of the term “esthetician.”

Cosmetologist
An individual who is trained and licensed to perform a variety of services in a salon setting, including hair, nail, and selected skin treatments.

Advanced Esthetician
A licensed esthetician or cosmetologist that has additional training and certification to perform advanced treatments in a salon or medical setting.

Paramedical Esthetician
A licensed esthetician who has received advanced education and practical application in caring for the skin, and as a result, is certified as a paramedical esthetician. This certification allows the individual to perform more advanced and complicated procedures and treat more severe skin conditions in a medical setting.
